How to use your hair and make up trial.

Getting your hair and make up right for your wedding day can be an anxiety inducing set of decisions. I caught up with leading destination wedding H&MU artist Ariana Rose for her advice on trials and why they’re so important.

At your trial you’re trying out two things:

  1. The hair and make up look you want to have on the day

  2. That the make up lasts

  3. That the artist fills you with confidence and calm

Your trial is important because, obviously it’s your chance to try your hair and make up. What you think you want on the day may not be right or make you feel comfortable and you can only suss this out by trying it.

A trial is also a chance to build a raport with the hair and make up artist. They will be with you for one of the most important and potentially nervous moments of your life. You want someone you get on with and trust, that’s going to keep you calm.

A trial should be 4-8 weeks before your wedding. This is because your body, skin, hair and ideas change. If you have it too early things will change and you’ll come to the day and be disappointed, things won’t match. If you do want to have it early, have a second trial closer to the wedding just to check things still work, change it up a little and get excited!

When sending reference pictures, be realistic about what you want and what you can have. Choose photos with people who have similar hair length and colour to you, similar skin tones. The artist will then be able to work closer to that rather than having to do something completely different because your choices won’t work.

If the supplier isn’t in the country, and you can’t have a trial pre-wedding we advise having a very thorough FaceTime call. Then have a trial the day or night before the wedding.
